Portraits and Figures about Music
Artist statement
While I was driving home and listening to my favorite band one day, scenes from the movie Whiplash where the drummer played so fast that everything seems stagnate. This idea that I can do something similar to show how motion feels when people play the instrument came across my mind. So it asked my friend to be the model and used a lamp and not tripod to shoot most of the photos in this portfolio. The series was set to present what music means to be. It begins from portraits of the artist and them playing, a relatively static point of view and moves on to add in motions and lighting effects that’s meant to capture the movement of the music.
This portfolio has a combination of both long exposure and still portraits. I would like to emphasize on the long exposure ones. I used the technique of multiple exposure in the ones that have two or more clear figures. This is one way I used to present motion. In addition, to imitate continuous motion, I used the technique of long exposure and motion blur. Only that I was the one moving not my object. This creates a flouting like light effect, making the object more lively. In addition, there were a lot of unexpected moments that creates interesting affects and compositions in the photos.
